Aging in Place Safety Checklist

Assessing your loved one’s environment can help identify potential risks and minimize harm.

By creating a safe and supportive space, you establish a strong foundation for aging in place.

This approach fosters independence, reduces the likelihood of falls and injuries, enhances emergency preparedness, and offers peace of mind for both your loved one and their caregivers.

Here's are things you may consider as your loved one’s age in place:

General Home Safety

✓ Identify and remove all tripping hazards (loose rugs, cords, clutter).
✓ Ensure all areas are well lit (especially stairs, hallways, and entry paths).
✓ Install night lights or sensor lights in hallways and bathrooms.
✓ Consider lever-style door handles (easier than knobs).
✓ Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors with loud alarms and flashing lights.
✓ Place emergency numbers and medical info near the phone or on the fridge.
✓ Consider a medical alert system or wearable emergency call button.
✓ Assess and determine ability for single floor living. (If possible)

Entrances and Exits

✓ Install sturdy handrails on both sides of all steps.
✓ Ensure all paths to the entrances are brightly lit.
✓ Consider a ramp if stairs are present and mobility is an issue.
✓ Use non-slip mats or textured strips outside.
✓ Ensure locks are easy to open from the inside.
✓ Consider a table or hooks for placing belongings when entering or exiting.
✓ Add a peephole or video doorbell for safe viewing.

Living Room

✓ Arrange furniture for clear walking paths.
✓ Use chairs with arms and firm cushions for easier sitting and standing.

✓ Use appliances with automatic shut-off features.
✓ Mark stove controls with large, clear labels.
✓ Install good task lighting over countertops and stove.
✓ Use a sturdy step stool with handrails if necessary.
✓ Use pull out shelves or lazy Susan’s for easy access

Bedroom

✓ Keep a phone and flashlight within arm’s reach of the bed.
✓ Use a bed at a safe height for getting in and out easily.
✓ Consider bed rails or elevating beds for individuals with mobility issues.
✓ Consider a motion-sensor night light.
✓ Place a sturdy chair nearby for daily activities.
✓ Have an emergency call device within reach of the bed.

Bathroom

✓ Install grab bars near the toilet and inside the shower/tub.
✓ Use a raised toilet seat if needed.
✓ Consider a walk-in shower with shower bench.
✓ Place non-slip mats inside and outside the tub/shower.
✓ Use a shower chair and hand-held shower head for stability.
✓ Keep toiletries within easy reach to avoid bending or stretching.

Laundry & Utility Areas

✓ Keep detergent and supplies on low, accessible shelves.
✓ Ensure floors are dry and clutter-free.
✓ Label all cleaning agents and separate from food preparation items.
✓ Mark hot and cold faucets clearly.

Garage & Outdoors

✓ Install motion-sensor or dusk-to-dawn lighting.
✓ Use handrails on all steps.
