Questions To Ask Before Any Medical Tests

Before your loved one is scheduled for any routine or diagnostic test, there are some questions that you should make a point to ask in advance.

  • What is the complete name of the test?
  • What is the reason for the test? Also, what might happen if the test is delayed or not done?
  • How accurate is the test? Are there other tests that are equally effective?
  • How much does the test cost? Is there a less expensive test that might give the same information?
  • What should be done to prepare for the test?
  • Where will the test be done? Is there a cost difference if the test is performed in the hospital versus an outpatient clinic?
  • How long does the test take?
  • How will my loved one feel during the test? Will it be painful?
  • Will I need to arrange transportation to and from the test?
  • What are the risks or side effects?
  • What can the results show?
  • How will the results affect treatment decisions?
  • What activities can alter the results, such as certain foods or medications?
  • When will the results be available? Can they be accessed online?
  • After the test is completed, what are the next steps?
  • Will other tests be needed?
  • Do you have written information on the test? Is information available online?
