Introducing Adult Day Programs

A daughter worries about her father who lives alone in a small apartment. An elderly husband needs a break from caring for his wife who has Alzheimer's disease. Both want their loved ones to live at home as long as possible.

Adult day programs offer a safe place for older adults to enjoy activities and the company of other people. Their services make it possible for older people to live at home instead of moving to a nursing home. Employed caregivers can continue to work and elderly spouses have much-need time for themselves.

DAY PROGRAM SERVICES

Day centers offer meals, snacks, and a variety of activities – art, exercise, music, outings – and the company of other people. Most facilities are open five days a week and some also offer weekend services. Nursing care, social services, transportation, physical and occupational therapy, and personal care (bathing, hair care) may be available.

CHOOSING A PROVIDER

Look in the Yellow Pages of telephone directory under "Adult Day Care" or "Aging Services" to find programs in your area or contact your local Area Agency on Aging. Visit the center at least once to meet the staff and see if you and your relative will feel comfortable with the facility, staff, activities and other participants.

  • Are services and fees thoroughly explained?

  • Is the facility clean, odor-free, and comfortable?

  • Are "quiet rooms" available for those who need time alone?

  • How is food prepared and served?

  • What activities are offered? Will your relative enjoy them?

  • Do the hours fit with your schedule? Is transportation provided?

  • Is the facility wheelchair accessible?

  • Is staff friendly, qualified and well-trained?

PAYING FOR DAY SERVICES

Fees range from $25 to $70 per day for meals, snacks, and activities. Transportation, health and other special services are often extra. Medicare does not always cover day services but Medicaid may in some situations.

TALKING TO YOUR RELATIVE ABOUT DAY PROGRAMS

Day centers are pleased to welcome new clients and many offer trial periods to make sure you and your relative feel comfortable with the surroundings, staff, food, and activities. When find a center you like, arrange a visit with your family member. Before the visit, explain you worry that he or she is bored and lonely at home all day. Day centers are a good place to make new friends, have lunch, and enjoy some new activities.
