Intergenerational Activities For The Holiday Season

Tis the season for spending time with family and loved ones.

Whether you're celebrating the holidays or just spending quality time together, it's often hard to find something to do that everyone will enjoy. Studies have shown that there are many benefits for seniors who participate in activities with children, including burning more calories, fewer falls and better memory performance. Older adults with dementia have experienced more positive effects during interactions with children than when participating in non-intergenerational activities.

You can learn a lot from your loved one, but you can teach your loved one something too. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Pull Out the Family Recipe Book

Every family has certain recipes that get passed down through the generations. Now is a great time for your loved one to pass down those recipes so that they're not lost forever.

Have a Computer Lesson

The younger generation can navigate a computer in their sleep, but for your loved one, learning how to use a computer may seem daunting. Sit down with your loved one and show them the many benefits of having a computer such as, keeping in touch electronically, sharing photos, shopping online and stimulating their mind with online games and activities.

Play a Board Game

Board games are a great way to get into the competitive spirit with the whole family. They often have learning opportunities for kids, and they'll help keep your loved one's mind active. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that seniors who participate in board games reduce their risk of dementia by seven percent.

Do a Craft

Try doing some art projects with your loved one and children. There are endless holiday craft ideas out there; decorate an ornament, make your own holiday cards or make a gingerbread house. Creative projects can help your loved one with hand-eye coordination, cognitive abilities and concentration. There are many ways to keep your loved one sharp and active this holiday season with activities that everyone in the family can enjoy!
